Year 9 Comprehension – Jamaica Inn (Daphne du Maurier)

This three-lesson mini-unit is designed to help Year 9 students develop the comprehension and analytical skills required for success at GCSE. Using an extract from Daphne du Maurier’s Jamaica Inn, the resource combines exam-style practise with modelled answers and guided feedback to build pupil confidence.

The unit includes a 44-slide editable PowerPoint, 4 printable worksheets, and a five-question comprehension assessment.

Lesson One:

  • Introduction to GCSE-style comprehension tasks

  • Guided first and second readings of the extract

  • Tackling unfamiliar vocabulary and making inferences
