Welcome to Year 7 English – The Mystery of the Abandoned Schoolbag is an engaging 60-minute transition lesson designed to introduce pupils to KS3 English at the beginning of Year 7. Built around the mystery of an abandoned schoolbag, the lesson develops reading, inference, speaking and listening, creative writing, editing and proofreading skills.

Pupils investigate a collection of mysterious clues, use evidence to make inferences, create a profile of the bag’s owner and read an intriguing story opening. They then plan and write a focused 200–300 word continuation before reviewing and improving their work.
