The Year 7 English Challenge

Welcome pupils to secondary English with this engaging, fully resourced lesson for the start of Year 7.

Pupils complete five short, accessible challenges covering vocabulary, reading and inference, speaking and listening, descriptive writing and editing. They then crack a final English code and reflect on their existing strengths and areas for improvement.

The varied activities introduce pupils to the core skills they will develop in KS3 English while giving teachers a useful, low-stakes insight into pupils’ starting points. With minimal teacher talk and plenty of purposeful pupil activity, it is ideal for meeting a new Year 7 class in September.
