Sonnets - Year 5 and 6 - teaching resource
Sonnets – KS2 Poetry Lesson for Year 5/6
This engaging and accessible resource introduces upper KS2 pupils to the form and structure of Shakespearean sonnets. The lesson begins with a clear explanation of sonnet rules, using a classic example to support pupils in identifying key poetic features such as rhyme scheme, syllable count, and theme.
Pupils then analyse a sample sonnet and discuss its use of language and structure before moving on to the writing phase. A scaffolded approach guides children through the process of planning and writing a class sonnet, followed by an opportunity to craft their own.
The resource is fully editable and differentiated into Bronze, Silver, and Gold levels to support learners of all abilities.
Perfect for a standalone poetry session or part of a wider unit on figurative language and classic texts.
