An excellent teaching unit for lower ability Year 8/9 pupils - dyslexia friendly and ideal for reluctant readers.
The Barrington Stoke novel Gamer is a captivating 100 page dystopian adventure story with plenty of action and an engaging videogames theme. With large text and well-spaced pages, it’s not only dyslexia friendly but also boy friendly and perfect for low ability reading groups and reluctant readers.
This comprehensive scheme of work is aimed at pupils in Key Stage 3 with below average literacy skills and includes a range of reading and writing tasks, directly linked to the National Curriculum - with the text acting as a stimulus and exemplar of effective writing skills. It can be adapted for between 15 and 22 lessons.
There are accompanying Gamer worksheets, some differentiated, and an age appropriate 62 slide PowerPoint presentation focused specifically at the target audience. The text could be used to compare with Oliver Twist.
