GCSE English Teaching Resources: A Christmas Carol - The Ghost of Christmas Past
(15-slide PowerPoint presentation with 4 worksheets)
Early on in Stave Two, Scrooge meets the Ghost of Christmas Past, a strange figure seemingly representing contradictory ideas. This resource for KS4/GCSE students enables learners to explore Dickens’ presentation of the Ghost of Christmas Past.
Contents include:
- A differentiated 'Do Now' task / starter activity that encourages learners to revise characters, quotations and ideas from Stave One.
- Learners then read from, ‘When Scrooge awoke, it was so dark…’ down to ‘… to wear it low upon my brow’, exploring how Dickens presents the Ghost of Christmas Past and why Scrooge yearns to see the Ghost put on its extinguisher cap.
- Following on from this, learners will use a sheet of visual clues to help them interpret key details from Dickens’ description of the Ghost.
- The lesson concludes with a differentiated review which asks learners to examine three images and suggest how they relate to Scrooge.
