A Christmas Carol – Scrooge’s Death

(13-slide editable PowerPoint with 4 worksheets)

This GCSE English Literature lesson explores Dickens’ presentation of Scrooge’s deathbed in Stave Four of A Christmas Carol. The 13-slide fully editable PowerPoint and four accompanying worksheets guide learners through close reading, analysis, and reflection on this powerful and symbolic moment in the novella.

The lesson begins with a true or false retrieval task focusing on the events of the previous scene in Old Joe’s, consolidating learners’ understanding before moving into a deeper analysis of Scrooge’s fate.

Learners then read from “‘Spirit,’ said Scrooge, shuddering from head to foot…” down to “I beseech you”, focusing on:

  • How Dickens presents Scrooge’s fear, guilt, and desperation

  • The role of the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come in heightening tension

  • The symbolic significance of Scrooge’s confrontation with his mortality

Following the reading, learners complete a differentiated worksheet containing a range of structured questions designed to develop close analysis and evaluative skills.

Suggested answers are provided for all tasks, making this resource ideal for classroom teaching, intervention, revision, or exam preparation.
