This comprehensive Year 2 spelling resource is designed to help pupils develop key spelling skills aligned with the Year 2 English programme of study for writing - transcription. It supports children in learning how to:

  • Segment spoken words into phonemes and represent them with accurate graphemes

  • Explore alternative spellings for known phonemes and practise common homophones

  • Spell common exception words

  • Use contracted forms and the possessive apostrophe (singular)

  • Distinguish between homophones and near-homophones

  • Add suffixes such as –ment, –ness, –ful, –less, –ly

  • Apply spelling rules outlined in English Appendix 1

  • The use of ar and or after w

  • Apostrophes for contraction and possession

  • Words ending in -tion

  • Homophones
