This comprehensive Year 2 spelling resource is designed to help pupils develop key spelling skills aligned with the Year 2 English programme of study for writing - transcription. It supports children in learning how to:

• Segment spoken words into phonemes and represent them with accurate graphemes

• Explore alternative spellings for known phonemes and practise common homophones

• Spell common exception words

• Use contracted forms and the possessive apostrophe (singular)

• Distinguish between homophones and near-homophones

• Add suffixes such as –ment, –ness, –ful, –less, –ly

• Apply spelling rules outlined in English Appendix 1

‘Spelling Skills – Year 2’ covers a broad range of spelling patterns and rules, including:

• Prefixes

• -ge and -dge endings

• Soft ‘c’ and hard ‘c’ sounds

• Words with silent letters (wr, gn, kn)

• Words ending in le, al, el, and il

• Words ending in -y

• Suffixes and pluralisation

• The use of ar and or after w

• Apostrophes for contraction and possession

• Words ending in -tion

• Homophones

The resource features a fully editable PowerPoint presentation, enabling teachers to adapt the materials to suit the needs of their learners.

It includes 16 worksheets to accompany the activities in the PowerPoint.
