Limericks – Year 7 Teaching Resource

This fun and engaging Lower KS3 lesson introduces Year 7 pupils to the playful world of limericks. Designed to make poetry accessible and enjoyable, the resource helps learners explore structure, rhythm, and language before creating their own humorous poems.

The lesson begins with examples of classic limericks, alongside a clear explanation of the ‘rules’ that define the form. Pupils are then tasked with exploring these examples, discussing layout, structure, and word choices to build understanding of how limericks work.

In the second half of the lesson, learners follow a scaffolded approach to writing their own limericks. With a worked example and class activity to build confidence, students then move on to drafting their own individual poems.

Differentiation is built in through Gold, Silver, and Bronze activities, ensuring pupils of all abilities are challenged and supported.

This resource is ideal as a standalone poetry lesson or as part of a wider KS3 poetry unit, helping Year 7 students develop literacy, creativity, and confidence in writing.
