Gripping Openings - teaching resource
Gripping Openings is a three-lesson mini-unit designed to introduce students to key reading analysis techniques and prepare them for GCSE English Language study. Ideal for Year 9 and Year 10 pupils — as well as less confident older students — this resource focuses on developing essential fiction analysis skills through the study of engaging opening extracts from three modern page-turner novels.
Students will learn how to apply the P.E.E.D. technique (Point, Evidence, Explanation, Development) and explore a range of language techniques used by authors to create tension, hook readers, and build intrigue.
The unit uses extracts from three exciting novels:
-
Conspiracy 365 by Gabrielle Lord
-
i-ssassins by Christopher Edge
-
Gone by Michael Grant
These extracts not only teach analytical skills but also encourage reading for pleasure, helping students discover new authors and genres.
The resource includes:
-
A fully editable PowerPoint presentation
-
Accompanying worksheets for analysis and practise
-
Structured activities designed to scaffold learning and build confidence
