A Christmas Carol - The Cratchits Part 5 - teaching resource
A Christmas Carol – The Cratchits Part 5
(17-slide editable PowerPoint with 6 worksheets)
This GCSE English Literature lesson is the final instalment in a five-part series exploring Dickens’ presentation of the Cratchit family in Stave Three of A Christmas Carol. Designed for KS4 learners, the 17-slide fully editable PowerPoint and six accompanying worksheets guide students through close reading, creative interpretation, and analytical writing, consolidating understanding of Dickens’ themes and characterisation.
The lesson focuses on the passage from “‘Mr Scrooge!’ said Bob. ‘I’ll give you the founder of the feast!’” down to “…especially on Tiny Tim, until the last”, highlighting Dickens’ portrayal of family unity, gratitude, and love in contrast to Scrooge’s earlier coldness and isolation.
The lesson begins with a differentiated Do Now starter activity, encouraging learners to retrieve and revise key ideas from the novella so far.
Learners then read the passage and transform the events into three visual images, helping them develop inference and symbolic understanding of Dickens’ imagery and narrative techniques.
Following this, learners complete a passage-based worksheet responding to prompts designed to deepen their analysis of Dickens’ presentation of the Cratchits. Suggested ideas are included on the PowerPoint to support teaching and independent study.
The lesson concludes with a learning journey review, where learners map their progress in understanding the Cratchits’ role across Stave Three and evaluate Dickens’ use of the family as a symbol of warmth, generosity, and moral values.
Perfect for classroom teaching, revision, intervention, or exam preparation, this resource brings together the key insights from the Cratchit-focused series and supports success in the GCSE English Literature exam.
