This GCSE English Literature lesson continues the study of Dickens’ presentation of the Cratchit family in Stave Three of A Christmas Carol. Designed for KS4 learners, the fully editable PowerPoint and accompanying worksheets guide students through close reading, analysis, and interpretation, deepening their understanding of Dickens’ themes and characterisation.

The lesson focuses on the passage from “Such a bustle ensued…” down to “…to hint at such a thing”, showcasing Dickens’ depiction of the Cratchits’ warmth, family unity, and festive spirit despite their financial struggles.

The lesson begins with a differentiated Do Now starter activity, where learners examine a selection of quotations from Staves One to Three and decide which is the odd one out, encouraging analytical thinking. Suggested answers are provided to support feedback.

Next, learners complete a revision task in which they evaluate eight statements about the Cratchits and decide which four are correct, reinforcing prior knowledge.

Learners then read the passage and respond to prompts on a passage-based worksheet, analysing Dickens’ presentation of the Cratchits in greater depth. Suggested ideas and guidance are included on the PowerPoint to support teacher-led discussion and independent study.

The lesson concludes with a learning review plenary, where learners summarise what they have learnt about the Cratchits in 20, 15, or 10 words, consolidating understanding and encouraging concise expression.
