A Christmas Carol - Stave 5 - Scrooge Makes Amends

(17-slide editable PowerPoint lesson with 4 worksheets)

This differentiated lesson enables learners to explore Dickens’ presentation of Scrooge in Stave Five.

It assumes that learners have previously read the opening passage, from the beginning of Stave Five down to Scrooge’s delight in the ‘glorious’ bells and ‘heavenly sky’ of Christmas morning.

The lesson begins with a differentiated Quick-Fire Quiz in which learners answer as many questions as they can on Staves One-Four in eight minutes.

Learners will then read from ‘‘‘What’s today?’’ cried Scrooge’, down to the end of Stave Five.

After reading the passage, learners will then undertake a double-sided worksheet in which they respond to questions that encourage them to consider Dickens’ presentation of Scrooge in this stave.

The lesson concludes with a review in which learners chart Scrooge’s journey as a character through the novella.

Suggested answers are provided for all tasks.
