GCSE English Teaching Resources: A Christmas Carol - Ghost of Christmas Present
(15-slide PowerPoint presentation and 3 worksheets)
This is the first of a two-part lesson on the Ghost of Christmas Present at the beginning of Stave Three. Please note that it focuses on the following passage:
From: ‘Awaking in the middle of a prodigiously tough snore…’ down to, ‘…as he came peeping around the door’.
The lesson begins with a differentiated 'Do Now' task which asks learners to consider a range of characters they have met so far from the perspective of a Christian.
Following on from this, learners read the above passage, focusing on:
- How Dickens presents Scrooge in this extract
- How Dickens presents Scrooge’s home in this extract
Our initial impression of the Ghost of Christmas Present and how Dickens achieves this.
Learners will then consider how Scrooge’s room is transformed under the influence of the Ghost of Christmas Present. This task uses an illustration of the room as the basis for differentiated questioning.
The lesson concludes with learners identifying five things they have learnt during the lesson.
